Tom’s flute playing developed through immersion in Irish traditional music alongside formal classical training.
That combination created an approach shaped by the life and rhythmic subtlety of traditional music, together with a strong awareness of tone, colour and ensemble.
Performance is not separate from the later work as arranger, composer, conductor and educator. It is the point from which much of that musical thinking begins.
1996 — more than a decade
Danú
Tom joined Danú in 1996 and spent more than a decade touring and recording internationally with the group during a formative period in his professional life.
Those years placed music in its most immediate setting: an audience, other musicians and the unpredictable energy of live performance.

Training & collaboration
Two traditions
An honours performance degree and formal classical flute study sit alongside a musical life immersed in Irish traditional performance.
